Back Room Jazz new dates

This month the Back Room Jazz Club once again brings two new exciting bands.

On Thursday 17th March, the very talented jazz pianist Tom Lindsay brings his trio to the Back Room.  He’s no stranger to the jazz at the George IV, having played as a sideman during the festival, and on several of the monthly gigs. Support for this gig comes from the jazz trombonist Tom Baxter and his six-piece hard bop band.

The details are the same as always, with music starting at 8.30pm, and carrying on till roughly 11pm.  The George IV pub in Lichfield is the host for lots of live music, and it is very lucky that we can book a monthly slot to host jazz – so do please come and support! Other venues in Lichfield are under threat from noise complaints, so I’m really keen to help keep the live music scene alive!

The next few Back Room Jazz Gigs are:

Thursday 21st April: Alicia Gardener-Trejo and her Benny Golson Project, and support from the Will Rumney Quartet

Thursday 19th May: Back Room Jazz Jam Session Spectacular! We’ll have a set from the house band, then invite all jazzers up to jam!

Interplay in Derbyshire

Performing for Mayfield Music at the Coach House at the Royal Oak pub, Hanging Bridge,  Mayfield,  nr. Ashbourne, Derbyshire DE6 2BN on Saturday 19th March, 7.30pm

This isn’t just your usual jazz band – this is modern jazz with a smile on its face!

Mayfield Music is delighted to host INTERPLAY – Adrian, Alan, Richard, Neil & Dave – as part of its 2011 season of concerts for the local community. Dedicated jazz fan or general music lover – this concert is one for you!

Started by bassist and composer Adrian Litvinoff in 2007 the band has built a strong reputation for its repertoire of jazz favourites, Latin & African edge and original tunes. Based in Warwickshire, the boys have built a loyal following across the Midlands and have played in several Staffordshire/Derbyshire venues over the last 4 years.

They play sax, trombone, keyboard, bass and percussion and have musical backgrounds that embrace mainstream British jazz  - rock& blues – Jamaican ska & reggae – Latin salsa  -  African – classical and country music. With this heady and eclectic mix of experience their collaborations read like a Who’s Who in music over the last 40 years – from veteran jazz star John Dankworth to Georgie Fame, Robin Jones of King Salsa fame to David Essex and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Who haven’t they worked with?

This concert is a “first” for Mayfield Music, which has recently joined the successful Midlands-wide Live and Local network of concert promoters. Through this link MM hopes to bring a wider choice of great quality musical performers to Mayfield in the future. Watch out for more details on INTERPLAY and other concerts on their website at www.mayfieldmusic.org.uk

So, come and join us at the Royal Oak on 19th March to support your local concert promoter and to hear INTERPLAY – quite simply one of the most creative and memorable bands around.

“The best night out we’ve ever had” – recent Derbyshire audience for Interplay

Tickets – £10.00 (£6 students)

Will Collier Septet in Stratford

Big News! Big-Band News from Stratford Jazz http://www.stratfordjazz.org.uk

VENUE: ‘The Chapel’, No.1 Shakespeare Street, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 6RN Tel: 01789 264787

Sun 6 Mar, 8pm – Will Collier Septet, £8 (Students ½-price)

Will Collier (b) Ben Somers (ts) Mike Lesirge (as)

Joe Auckland (t) Bob Dowell (tb) Ed Sheldrake (p) Ben Reynolds (d)

Rarely does Stratford Jazz get the opportunity to present anything like a big-band sound but on Sunday 6th March we get pretty close with the four-horn front line. This septet created quite a storm when they visited Stratford Jazz in 2009 and their debut album ‘Everybody Loves The Will Collier Septet’ subsequently received four stars in Jazzwise magazine.

They return to Stratford Jazz to introduce their new album ‘Those Who Wait’ and advanced reports suggest that another rousing success is on the way. This is an exhilarating and punchy ensemble which delivers gutsy and melodic originals from a leader who is not only a fine bass player but an accomplished composer/arranger.

The Will Collier Septet is an exhilarating and punchy ensemble delivering gutsy but tuneful originals from Will Collier. A septet with bright flair and a beguiling sound mix – not to be missed!

“Live, the Collier Septet’s good humour and enthusiasm makes the band hugely enjoyable.” all•about•jazz

” … what Collier does best: writing arresting melodies with a twist of slightly melancholic lyricism …its chief attraction, lies in what Seb Rochford terms its ‘surprising structures’ and ‘people expressing together’. Indeed, what lingers in the mind after the septet’s live performances is the rich, full-bodied sound of Collier’s bass, which is at the heart of all the music performed on this promising album.” (Refers to: Everybody Loves The Will Collier Septet) The Vortex

Interplay on home turf – for once

Interplay at the Attenborough Centre Leicester

Members of Interplay are hoping for a good turnout of friends and fellow-travellers when we play at Hatton Village Hall next Saturday, February 12th.  After 4 years of working around the East and West Midlands on the Rural Touring  circuit we finally have a village hall date in Warwickshire where the band is based!

There is something special about playing in a village hall.  Many of the audience know each other and the social dimension really counts.  Not all the audience are jazz fans by any means, but they come along with an open mind and to enjoy themselves.  Then there’s the hospitality – often delicious home-made food to keep our energies up because of major distances travelled and long hours put in.

The difference this time is that Hatton is just outside Warwick, about 10 miles from my home, and I’m unlikely to need motorway services on the way home for a late-night caffeine hit!

So please come and experience jazz in a different environment.  Tickets are going fast, and advance booking is recommended – details as follows:

February 12th  7.45pm  Hatton Village Hall, Birmingham Road, CV35 7LR Warwickshire  01926 484692
